Literacy Coalition Announces New Board Members
The Palm Beach County Literacy Coalition swore in new members to its board of directors at its recent annual meeting. They are:
¦ Chairman — Matthew Criscuolo of Boca Raton, attorney at Cozen O’Connor. A native of Florida, he graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Arts in economics and political science before heading to law school at Nova Southeastern University. He has been a board member of the Literacy Coalition since 2017 and participates in many of its fundraising events.
¦ Vice-Chairs — Dr. Regine Bataille of Delray Beach and Christopher Duke of Palm Beach Gardens are both long-time members of the Coalition’s Board of Directors. Dr. Bataille is a pediatrician with Gentle Medicine Associates in Boynton Beach and an avid Coalition volunteer and literacy advocate. Dr. Bataille participates in the Reach Out and Read program. Dr. Bataille is a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine of the State University of Haiti.
Mr. Duke is the Managing Partner of Akerman’s offices in Palm Beach County.
He has been continuously ranked for his acumen for work and employment by The Best Lawyers in America, among other publications.
¦ Secretary – Sharon Hill of West Palm Beach retired as Deputy Library Director of the Palm Beach County Library System in 2015. The Library System has been involved with the Literacy Coalition since its inception and offers one-on-one tutoring for adults learning to read and many activities that encourage children to develop a love of reading and learning. Ms. Hill has served on the Coalition’s Board of Directors since 1999 and is Chair of the Staff Committee
Committee. She has also served on the Bylaws, Nominations and Reading Committees together. She is a past president of the Palm Beach County Library Association and served as chair of the Florida Library Association’s planning committee. She graduated from Florida State University.
¦ Treasurer – Nicole Rocco of Palm Beach Gardens is a corporate lawyer practicing general corporate, commercial contracts, corporate governance, state and local sales/use taxes, regulations and compliance. She graduated with honors with a JD from Samford University, Cumberland School of Law, an MA from Florida International University, and a BA from Barry University. She has served on the board of the Literacy Coalition since 2019.
¦ Full Member — Bernadette O’Grady of Palm Beach Gardens is Director of Programming and Media Convergence for WPTV NewsChannel 5. She has served on the Literacy Coalition Board of Directors since 2000. She has held numerous positions on the board of directors, including that of president. from 2008 to 2010 and vice-president from 2006 to 2008. She is a member of the communications committee, the Grand Bee committee and chaired the Love of Literacy luncheon from 2011 to 2014 and then from 2018 to 2020. Ms. O’Grady is also volunteer at all of the Coalition’s annual fundraisers.
¦ Member at Large — Nancy Vera of Delray Beach is Associate Director, Global Event Management at Wolters Kluwer. She has served on the Coalition’s Executive Committee, co-chaired the Coalition’s American Girl Fashion Show, and chaired the Literacy Links Golf Tournament. She graduated from Boston College.
¦ Past President – Len Gray of West Palm Beach is a retired human resources consultant. Previously, he was a partner at Mercer and Deloitte Consulting and held executive positions in Cleveland, Chicago, Hong Kong and New York. As a member of the Literacy Coalition’s Board of Directors, Len served as Board Secretary, serves on the Executive Committee, and co-chaired the annual Loop for Literacy Walk, Bike and Run and the Coalition’s Development Committee. He has been a volunteer and board member for several education and learning organizations over the years. He is a graduate of Lehigh University and Case Western Reserve University, where he received his MBA.
¦ Parliamentarian — Laurie Gildan of North Palm Beach is a longtime member of the Coalition’s Board of Directors. She is a lawyer and shareholder with 30 years of practice at Greenberg Traurig. Ms. Gildan served as Chair of the Literacy Coalition Board of Directors from 2004-2006 and chaired the Blume Literacy Center Building Committee. She also chaired the Strategic Planning Committee and served on the Read Together Palm Beach County Committee. She is a graduate of Harvard Law School.
The Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County offers adult and family literacy programs, children’s literacy programs, and an AmeriCorps Literacy program, all aimed at improving the quality of life in our community by promoting and achieving literacy .
